Frequently Asked Questions

What Products and Services to you offer?

We manufacture fiberglass windows and doors, and everything is custom made to meet the needs of each customer and every space. Our high-quality products are ideal for home renovations and new construction as well as commercial projects. Our products are IEEE) compliant and are considered a green building material.

What are your most popular products?

Here in Winnipeg, we mostly supply triple-pane glass with Pultruded Fiberglass window and door frame systems, and all our frames are insulated. This type of system suits our climate the best because we have extremely hot and cold weather conditions. Pultruded Fiberglass frame has the least amount of expansion and contraction rates, so it’s very durable and it doesn’t react to the weather.

What are the advantages of using fiberglass windows and doors?

Fiberglass is the strongest window frame material available other than metal, which is not a natural insulator. The frames are made of about 75 per cent glass fibers and 25 per cent resin. The glass fibers are made from silica sand, which is melted and spun. Silica sand is in abundant supply. Fiberglass is energy efficient, environmentally friendly and very strong. In fact, it is eight times stronger than vinyl, 33 times stronger than wood or vinyl composite and two times stronger than aluminum.
In addition the expansion and contraction rate of fiberglass is almost identical to the rate of glass. As a result there is less internal stress thereby making the weather stripping and entire system more airtight.
As an added benefit, fiberglass looks great and it is very low maintenance, so you won’t need to worry about sanding, painting or staining the products in the future.

I have gotten quotes on replacement windows. I like no-maintenance fiberglass frames, but they cost more than white vinyl windows. Are there real advantages to installing windows with fiberglass frames?

In my opinion, fiberglass windows are worth the extra initial expense. You can get some relatively inexpensive vinyl windows. If you compare the fiberglass windows to top-quality name-brand windows using other frames materials, though, often the cost is not much higher.

Why is the company named Silex? What is the company history?

Silex is the Latin weed for Silica. This is the chemical compound foundation from which our window frames and glass are made. Silica is most commonly found in nature as quartz. Silica is one of the most complex and most abundant families of materials, existing both as several minerals and being produced synthetically. Silex Fiberglass Windows and Doors is a privately owned firm based in Winnipeg with office, showroom and fabrication facility at 1266 Border St. We specialize in pultruded fiberglass windows and doors. The company was built on and comprised of key individuals with many years of knowledge and experience in the window and door industry, with a focus on those with years of experience specializing in pultruded fiberglass windows and doors. Silex manufactures what we believe is the highest quality fiberglass window available in the market today, with North American Fenestration standard specifications far exceeding that of our competitors in the residential window replacement market.
