École Sage Creek School

École Sage Creek School is a state-of-the-art 21st-century institution that reflects the dynamic and diverse suburban community of south-east Winnipeg. The school’s design emerged from a collaborative process involving the Louis Riel School Division, Public Schools Finance Board, and the Sage Creek Community. This two-storey building incorporates progressive educational strategies to create a safer, more inviting, and inclusive learning environment.

Catering to early learning through grade 8, the school is structured around personal learning communities. These communities feature small, flexible learning areas, classrooms, and breakout spaces within larger zones organized by age group. These zones flow into a central commons area, with classrooms that can expand into the commons for larger group activities. The school’s design draws inspiration from its prairie surroundings, with masonry cladding arranged in linear patterns that symbolize the textures and patterns of the landscape.

Designed to serve both educational and community needs, the school incorporates various sustainability strategies to meet LEED® Silver and Manitoba Hydro Power Smart environmental standards. The architectural, landscape, and civil engineering elements are thoughtfully integrated with the surrounding community, ensuring minimal impact on local traffic.

The project aimed to create flexible, open, and shared learning environments while maintaining a sense of ownership. It emphasizes a strong connection with the outdoors, providing a sustainable, comfortable, and adaptable environment. The school fosters a welcoming atmosphere that supports both the educational and broader Sage Creek communities, encouraging collaboration and integration among educators, students, and disciplines through innovative design.
